Vacations in Marche, where to go and what to see

Have you decided to organise your summer holidays in Le Marche? Here are the most evocative locations and beaches.

Le Marche is characterised by being an Italian region capable of satisfying the tastes of any traveller: it offers both suggestive mountain areas and uniquely fascinating seaside destinations. Organising a holiday in Le Marche therefore means living several experiences in one.

The sea in the Marche region, in particular, boasts the presence of numerous 'Blue Flags', as many as 15 in 2020, certifying the quality of water, services and environmental management. But in the Marche region there are also several beaches with 'Green Flags', i.e., child-friendly.

The Marche's marine coastline is made up of almost 200 kilometres of beaches with an ever-changing natural conformation: from beaches with fine sand to unspoilt and wild stretches, from pebble and pebble beaches to natural parks that plunge directly into the Adriatic Sea. In short, Le Marche is a true resource to be discovered, especially during the summer period.

Pesaro, what to see and where to go to the sea

Pesaro is located on the north coast of the Marche region, on the border with Emilia-Romagna. It is a city founded by the Romans, as its historic centre divided by a typical cross-shaped structure formed by a cardo and decumanus also demonstrates. Right in the centre of the city, there are several Roman archaeological finds, medieval walls and beautiful Renaissance palaces. To best discover the city, the advice is to follow the Bicipolitana lines, a bicycle route developed over the years to make the city 'bike friendly', ideal for both young and old. After a stroll by the sea along viale Trieste, you can reach Piazzale della Libertà where you can admire one of the most suggestive things to see in Pesaro: we are talking about the Sfera Grande by the famous artist Arnaldo Pomodoro. But that is not all: the square is also home to some admirable examples of Art Nouveau architecture, including the Villino Ruggeri. On the list of what to see in Pesaro during the summer is definitely Monte San Bartolo, the green heart of the city, where adults and children alike can lose themselves admiring the panorama, the natural heritage and the marvellous historic villas housed within the park.

As far as the sea in Pesaro is concerned, the city's coastline is sandy, ideal for families with children, and surrounded by two green promontories that drop to the sea, namely Colle Ardizio and Monte San Bartolo. The Pesaro seafront is about 7 kilometres long, divided into Baia Flaminia, Ponente and Levante: dividing the Levante beach from the Ponente beach is, since 1998, Arnaldo Pomodoro's Sfera Grande.

The beaches close to the San Bartolo Park, such as Baia Flaminia beach, are true bays immersed in nature, with fine sand and a clear sea with a shallow seabed.

The Ponente beach is very popular because of its very shallow water and the high quality of the facilities present: in this sense, it is probably one of the most suitable for family tourism. Similarly, the Levante beaches also have bathing establishments with an extremely efficient organisation.

Ancona sea, the most special beaches and the city's beauties

Our tour of Le Marche continues in Ancona, a city that is often underestimated but actually has much to offer visitors. Starting with the Duomo di San Ciriaco, a splendid Romanesque-Byzantine cathedral overlooking the sea, which is the highest point of the city, from which one can enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the whole of Ancona. In addition to the Duomo, the list of what to see in Ancona certainly cannot fail to include Piazza del Plebiscito, called Piazza del Papa by the inhabitants, in honour of Clement VII who gave new impetus to the city and its port.

Another symbol of this place is the Mole Vanvitelliana, designed by architect Carlo Vanvitelli with the function of defence and lazaret. In summer, you cannot miss a visit to Passetto, the district of Ancona that guards a green park with an extraordinary panoramic position overlooking the sea and the Conero Riviera. The area is equipped with bathing establishments and swimming pools, and there are also numerous premises built on stilts.

Il Passetto

As far as the sea in Ancona is concerned, consider that the city can offer different scenarios, all equally suggestive. The beach of Palombina Nuova is the northernmost of the Conero Riviera and is directly connected to Falconara. It is a long beach of golden sand, offering solutions for all tourists, from free stretches to establishments equipped with bars and restaurants. The sea that washes Palombina beach is blue and clean, with the seabed sloping gently towards the open sea, ideal especially for families with children. This beach is accessible to people with disabilities, thanks to lift overpasses leading directly to the sandy shore.

The city beach is the Lido del Passetto, which can be reached on foot directly from the city centre. It is not a particularly large beach but is characterised by white pebbles and rocks, such as the Seggiola del Papa (Pope's Chair) or the Scoglio del Quadrato (Square Rock), as well as a clear sea. It is the most famous beach in the city and the most frequented by its inhabitants. Moving along the Conero Riviera, still in the territory of the province of Ancona, we also find Mezzavalle beach: wild, immersed in the nature of Monte Conero and reachable only on foot via a steep path, this strip of land offers visitors a splendid sea with a deep blue seabed and a shoreline of fine gravel. Mezzavalle beach is very popular with water sports enthusiasts, such as surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Another particularly popular Ancona seaside resort is Portonovo, a place where vegetation, beach and nature come together in a spectacular combination. The sandy shore is composed of pebbles, white pebbles and gravel, while the sea is an intense blue colour with shades of green. Portonovo beach offers both free stretches and equipped lidos and can also be reached by people with disabilities, thanks to the presence of special beach wheelchairs..

Civitanova Marche, sea and what to see

Located in the province of Macerata, along the Adriatic coast, Civitanova Marche is a town that particularly comes alive in the summer. On the list of what to see in Civitanova Marche, you can start from the historical centre, where you will find numerous noteworthy religious and civil architectures, such as the Ducal Palace, Villa Sforza, the Church of Christ the King and the Church of St John the Baptist. The city also has an upper part, reached by taking the Palazzaccio panoramic road, from which you can admire the characteristic comb shape of the Marche hills. Civitanova Alta will surprise you with its narrow alleys and charming little squares, a reminder of what was once a medieval village.

Coming to the sea in Civitanova Marche, consider that the city's coastline is characterised by a long eight-kilometre beach divided by the fishing and tourist port. To the north, the shore is wide and sandy, with shallow water; the southern shore, on the contrary, is characterised by a mixture of sand and gravel and deeper water. The sea coast of Civitanova Marche can also be travelled by bicycle along the Adriatic Cycle Route. The beach of Civitanova Marche has been awarded the Blue Flag several times by the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education), as well as the Green Flag for beaches suitable for families with children. The beach is also accessible to persons with motor disabilities, who can also bathe thanks to special beach wheelchairs. Most of the bathing establishments in Civitanova Marche also allow dogs onto the beach.
